Q&A with Riaan Combrink
How did you get started in radio broadcasting?
This is my first assignment in radio broadcasting. I am, however, a founding director of the Blouberg Development Foundation NPC (BDF) and have been involved in the establishment of ONE FM 94.0 by the BDF since its inception.
What drove you to get into radio broadcasting?
Having been involved in establishing ONE FM 94.0 I also relish the opportunity of being part of its on-air team! I have wanted to present a specialist music show since first listening to radio as a teenager and, although I don’t have previous radio experience, I am an experienced public speaker and performer.
What’s your favourite sport?
Who is your favourite international artist(s) or band?
Pink Floyd, Van Morrison, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Steely Dan, Bob Dylan, Rodrigues, Neil Young and Billy Joel.
Who is your favourite South African artist(s) or band?
Johnny Clegg, Bright Blue and Robin Auld.
What’s your favourite pastime?
Playing guitar and singing with my covers duo (Synchronicity), watching movies and series (particularly Sci-Fi), reading non-fiction and watching documentaries or reading books about music and musicians.
What’s your favourite hobbie?
As with pastimes above, playing guitar, writing songs, reading and movies.
What is, in your opinion, the world’s biggest problem(s)?
Simply put, arrogance and selfishness. It is because of these two universal traits that so many fail to understand the common humanity of all persons regardless of race, religion, social standing and sexual orientation, and that we also fail to treat the planet and its non-human inhabitants with respect.
How can we change the world?
Treat all persons and creatures as we would want to be treated ourselves, and listen to John Lennon’s “Imagine” every morning and just do what it says for the rest of the day.
Who would play you in the film of your life if it were a comedy?
Richard Gere (yes him, that great comedic actor!).
Who would play you in the film of your life if it were a drama?
Robert de Niro.
What is your favourite word – in Afrikaans, isiXhosa or English?
“Thank you” and “please” for its importance, and “veselperske” in Afrikaans (meaning “mango”) as just the coolest word ever.
Amongst my friends, I am famous for/best known for?
Always being late, providing legal advice and my supposed encyclopaedic knowledge of popular music.
Which team do you relentlessly support?
Liverpool Football Club – you’ll never walk alone (YNWA) ... although you may often wish you could.
If I were an animal, I’d be…
If I were an animal I’d be a wolf. No reason … just the coolest mutts ever.
If I were a musical style or genre, I’d be…
If I were a musical style or genre, I’d be Classic Rock … so I can live on forever despite fads and fashion coming and going.
If I could go back in time, I’d…
If I could go back in time, I’d never go back further than the day on which my first child was born. Couldn’t live without those two monkeys … even for a day.
If I had a superpower it would be…
If I had a superpower it would be invisibility … so I could be left alone when I don’t feel like being bugged by people.
I am a die hard fan of…
I am a die-hard fan of … whoever discovered that roasting coffee beans and dissolving it in boiling water puts all life’s problems in perspective (apparently a toss-up between an Ethiopian goat-herder called Kaldi and Suffi monks and mystics in Yemen) .
If you had to choose: Oprah or Ellen?
Ellen for sure. Great sense of humour and a champion for LGBT Human Rights. An entertainer that’s not afraid to stand up for others, and successful despite stereotypes. What more can one ask for?
If you had to choose: Superman or Batman?
Batman. I’ve always been drawn to the Dark Side of the Force? What – no Darth Vader option? Grrrr!!
If you had to choose: John Legend or Pharrell Williams?
Neither – but John Legend if I have to choose one of these two!
If you had to choose: Beyonce or Rihanna?
Seriously?! Neither. Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, Carole King, Bonnie Raitt, Aimee Mann are real female musicians. Those two are peas in a pod … form over substance. Prefer my female artists to think about the right lyric or chord, not which outfit is best for the video.
If you had to choose: Michael Buble or James Blunt?
Michael Buble, I just love his voice and James Blunt is apparently a douchebag.
If you had to choose: Madonna or Lady Gaga?
Tough one. Madonna forged a career with sheer talent and determination, and made some classic pop songs while reinventing herself constantly. Lady Gaga follows no rules and makes unconventional pop part of the mainstream. Both great artists and have my respect.
If you had to choose: Cats or Dogs?
Cats. Pets for people who don’t mind being ignored and thus have no self-esteem issues.
If you had to choose: Morning or night?
Night. All night long. It is too bright during the day and people expect you to work then.
If you had to choose: Summer or Winter?
Winter. I can make myself warm in a number of pleasing ways, but not vice-versa.
If you had to choose: Android or Apple?
Android. Apple is for fan-boys who refuse to compare specs.
If you had to choose: Twitter or Facebook?
Facebook. Anything worth saying needs more than 140 characters to say.
If you had to choose: Tea or coffee?
Coffee! No reasons necessary … just taste it!
