Q&A with Dean Friederich
How did you get started in radio broadcasting?
I first got involved in radio broadcasting in 2012 when I attended an open call audition that 94.5 Kfm was having at the time. Before then, I had never had any intention of getting involved in radio as I was a drama student at City Varsity. Back then, I was convinced that I was going to become an actor, both on screen & in theatre.
What drove you to get into radio broadcasting?
It was in fact one of my sisters who had heard about the audition and told me about it. She was adamant that I should go and try it out, even though I wasn’t too sure about it as I didn’t think I had what they were looking for. Nevertheless, after what I believed the worst audition ever, I ended up being offered a paid internship with the station where I hosted a show for a month. I completely fell in love and the rest was history!
What’s your favourite sport?
I’ve never been the athletic type, but growing up my family was very much into motorsport and still is today. I would have to say that I would much prefer seeing cars or motorbikes racing around a track than sitting through a rugby match!
Who is your favourite international artist(s) or band?
Where do I start?! I have many favorite international artists within many different music styles ranging from Lady Gaga (of course!) to Drake & Fetty Wap.
Who is your favourite South African artist(s) or band?
I am seriously digging on Goldfish at the moment. Their beats are amazing and I love the vibe they give off at their live shows!
What’s your favourite pastime?
Whenever I have spare time on my hands, I am either spending it with my family and/or my friends. I am a huge people’s person and love spending my free time out & about with my loved ones.
What’s your favourite hobbie?
Growing up, I used to take piano lessons in junior school and I was part of my school choir for many years. It sort of fizzled away as I grew up but I think that if I had to take up another hobby today, it would probably be learning to play a musical instrument, or giving back to my community by getting involved with a local charity.
What is, in your opinion, the world’s biggest problem(s)?
Although we are living in the 21st century where cars are electrically powered, our food is scientifically engineered instead of being grown out of the ground or from a tree, too many people of the world adopt a way of living that I feel is much too narrow-minded for the time that we live in. I truly believe that if many people in the world opened their mind and hearts to the people around them, we would have a much better understanding of people’s cultural and/or religious backgrounds, lifestyle choices and ways of living. I believe that this could also help bring a stop to ongoing global issues like racism, homophobia and war.
How can we change the world?
It may sound super cheesy, but I think that if you live each day of your life by being the change that you would like to see in the world, we can help make the world a better place. This can be seen in many different and sometimes very simple ways like greeting a stranger in the shopping malls, donating to the homeless or recycling.
Who would play you in the film of your life if it were a comedy?
Probably Dave Franco – but he would of course need to dye his hair first!
Who would play you in the film of your life if it were a drama?
Andrew Garfield after a good dye job as well!
