Big Top Rock: where the music you love joins the circus
25 August 2017 Uncategorized
What happens when your favourite rock and pop idols join the circus?
It is not a question everyone would ask but thankfully someone did and then they made it happen. The Barnyard Theatre’s latest musical masterpiece is something for the whole family and is far more than just familiar songs that everyone knows being sung by great performers. Big Top Rock takes pinch of Moulin Rouge and a hint of Cirque du Soleil and adds live musical performances of your favourite Pop, Rock and Rock ‘n’ Roll hits to create a show that is quite literally mesmerising.
As always, the Barnyard brings some of the best vocal talent that can belt out a ballad and scream out a rock anthem that will have you tapping your feet, clapping your hands and singing along even if you don’t know the words. But this production team have added something totally unexpected that elevates a superb musical production to a mind-blowing experience and night out unlike any other.
Acrobatics and other circus acts are performed as part of an adventure through music that somehow marries the music to the performance. Dancing with a musical production is expected and The Barnyard is well known for some amazing choreography but choreographed circus acts are something you will not want to miss.
The whole feel of Big Top Rock hosted by a rather mysterious ring master is like an over the top Queen video about to begin and one kind of feels that Freddie Mercury is looking down wishing he was performing, it has that eccentricity he had flowing in his veins . The stage has an old-school European circus look and feel to it with a cast dressed in amazing costumes that have a magical kind of awkwardness to them. The whole production is rough to perfection with fast costume changes and different “performances” for each song. The whole show is a really nice and happy busy that sadly makes the show feel not long enough.
Great music is what Barnyard is known for and you won’t be disappointed, reworked covers of songs form the biggest and best performers form the 1950’s to bang up to date will ensure Mom, Dad and the kids and Ouma an Oupa too, will be entertained and trying their hardest not to get up and dance. Dancing at Barnyard is part of the experience but with Big Top Rock you will find yourself glued to your seat as you watch in amazement at the circus performances that are world class. For a change, The Barnyard Theatre is less full of music at times as the oohs and aahs of the audience fill the auditorium at the feats performed in front of them and overhead.
If you have never been to the Barnyard Theatre, or if you only have the chance to go once this year Big Top Rock is the performance you really must see and tickets for this show will sell out fast. The show runs from 24th August to 8th October with 8pm performances from Tuesday to Saturday and 2pm performances on Sunday. Big Top Rock is a spectacular show for the entire family that takes live theatre to its limits and produces exceptional entertainment right here in Cape Town.
